Peterson Dayan: Urban Form and Spatial Dispersion of Population in Cities. 02/2023, Degree: Ph.D. in Architecture and Urban Planning, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Rômulo José da Costa Ribeiro.
Abstract: This doctoral research investigates the relationships between the spatial dispersion of population and the urban form of cities using automated tools in Python. Based on the study of urban complexity and its performance measures, at different scales, this work analyzes the real configuration of urban design in the context of graph theory and transportation systems, which drive the city. This research aims to develop possible relationships and refutations for issues related to urban and regional planning and design. Therefore, it is proposed that the urban space, as a functional product of the urban configuration, reflects a spatial logic of society. This urban space constitutes an empirical reality of the place, called sociological architecture. Defined by a system of barriers and permeability to movement, of transparencies and opacities to vision, of full and emptiness, and by social expectations, composed of different possibilities of encounters and avoidances between individuals. To assess the possible relationships between the spatial dispersion and the urban form, this study uses several computational tools to automate the description of urban space according to its hierarchical structure at global and local levels, crossing a georeferenced database of 8,914 cities around the world, in a Geographic Information System – GIS. This approach is supported by the theoretical, methodological and technical apparatus of spatial dispersion theory and graph theory, which employs the representation of axial maps and their attributes, mainly in terms of topological accessibility, as well as the spatial identification of the place based on GIS tools. Thus, this work analyzes the existing conflict between the most accessible areas and the concentration of people. With this, it identifies the influence of the city’s urban project on the population’s quality of life. It assesses aspects of historical evolution and current reality, inserted in the contemporary context of the cities, which have changed rapidly due to urban growth in recent decades.

Peterson Dayan: Spatial Configuration and Urban Mobility: a case study of the Federal District. 02/2018, Degree: Master in Architecture and Urban Planning, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Rômulo José da Costa Ribeiro, DOI:10.13140/RG.2.2.31991.06566/1
Abstract: The purpose of this research was analyzing the relationship between the urban space configuration and the main variables that affect the performance of urban mobility, such as density, compactness, integration, and connectivity. As a result, this study identified several variables of the spatial configuration that correlate statistically with the urban mobility system, allowing the measurement of its performance and, by Space Syntax, to visualize it in this complex system, whose method can easily be replicated in cities around the world.
